Scientists have discovered that junk foods may contribute to cataracts and glaucoma which, untreated, both cause blindness.

When treating cataracts and glaucoma, Glen Swartwout, O.D., of Hilo, Hawaii, stresses the relationship between nutrition and vision. For prevention of both disorders, he recommends a diet consisting of unrefined, natural foods, in addition to vitamin and nutritional supplements. Conversely, refined, processed, and junk foods may contribute to the development of cataracts and glaucoma, along with stress, alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and smoking, all of which deplete essential nutrients.
